The UV index in Salou is very high in summer: just 20 to 30 unprotected minutes in the sun can leave skin red and stinging. More serious cases can bring blisters, headache or dizziness.

At the pharmacy we stock water resistant SPF 50+ sunscreens for adults, children and sensitive skin, after sun with aloe vera and panthenol, over the counter hydrocortisone creams, oral rehydration salts and blister dressings. We'll recommend the right product for your skin type and your beach plans.

See a doctor if there is extensive blistering, fever, vomiting or confusion, or if the burn affects a baby or a young child.

What to do: leave the water calmly, remove any tentacle remains with tweezers or the edge of a card (never with a bare hand), rinse the area with seawater or saline and apply indirect cold wrapped in a cloth for 10 to 15 minutes.

What to avoid: do not rinse with fresh water and do not apply vinegar, ammonia, alcohol, urine or ice directly on the skin — they can release more toxin or irritate the wound.

We stock soothing gel, mild over the counter hydrocortisone creams, oral antihistamines and dressings. If breathing difficulty, significant swelling, dizziness or vomiting appears, or the sting covers the face, neck or a large area, go straight to a medical centre.

Always keep in your suitcase or beach bag: paediatric SPF 50+ sunscreen, UV hat and shirt, single dose saline, a thermometer, children's paracetamol or ibuprofen dosed by weight, oral rehydration salts, a paediatric antihistamine, child safe mosquito repellent, bite gel, plasters, sterile gauze, a gentle antiseptic and nappy rash cream.

Prescriptions from the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Norway: we can dispense them if they are European cross border prescriptions on paper, showing the patient's and doctor's details, the medicine (ideally by active ingredient), dose, route, duration and the prescriber's signature. Bring the original document and photo ID.

Prescriptions from outside the EU: these are generally not valid in Spain for prescription only medicines. We'll help you identify the active ingredient and, where one exists, an equivalent over the counter alternative. For chronic medication you will need a prescription issued by a doctor in Spain.

Either way, we'll advise you in your language about what we can dispense. Medicines subsidised by the Spanish public health system require a national system prescription.
